Many deficits directly limit a youth’s success to external assets. Some deficits block the development of internal assets such as educational aspirations. Some deficits make it easier to choose un-healthy or high risk behaviors. Deficits are liabilities which appear to make harm more probable.

Many young people are faced with At-risk behaviors which are actions that limit or endanger the psychological, physical, or economic well-being of adolescents. The concept of pro-social behaviors covers a wide range of actions. Such as helping people in distress, working to correct injustices or inequalities, or donating time and energy to service organizations. The promotion of pro-social behavior is considered to be an important strategy to prevent anti-social or health compromising behavior.

In its Implementation of the Positive Youth Development approach, Teens Uganda has has come across a number of  challenges most of which are due to several reasons as below:
  • Low self Esteem among young people and lack of sense of belonging
  • Adult-ism (Adult thinking that youth can lead"
  • Doubts that young people  are really being listened to and that their input can impact the system
  • Logistical issues i.e time, compensation, transportation, and scheduling insufficient to support youth involvement
